The evening

Experience a jolt of pure creative energy from music that turns tradition on its head.

Thomas Adès and Francisco Coll build on the legacy of past masters to create fresh, unpredictable sound worlds. And from its unmistakable opening chords to its meditative finale, Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms reinvents the possibilities of choral music.

Coll describes Lilith, heard here in its UK premiere, as a ‘ballet without choreography’. The many-sided and sometimes conflicting myth of Lilith is captured in the irresistible music.

Adès’ Piano Concerto is like nothing you’ve ever heard before. A review in The Times described one of the first performances in 2019: ‘As Kirill Gerstein sprinted to the end of the zanily cartoonish finale, I heard amazed gasps and even a shout of “Wow!”’
