The evening

It’s a 100% home team tonight, with Royal Northern Sinfonia, their Principal Guest Conductor Nil Venditti and Artistic Partner Maria Włoszczowska stepping up to the solo violin spot.

Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, Britten’s Violin Concerto, and, to start things off with a burst of energy, Grace Williams’ Sea Sketches.

One of the great things about Antonín Dvořák’s music is how straightforward it is. He’s never trying to be clever, he just lays out great tunes for all to enjoy – and his Symphony No. 8, full of bright, optimistic tunes is a classic example. Britten’s Violin Concerto is a more serious counterpart, a reflection on war. The piece is one big musical sweep from the first moment to the last, everything building tension until the finale.

Antonín Dvořák was the Francis Bourgeoise of his day – yes a bit of a trainspotter. He often took the train from Prague to Vienna and kept a VERY detailed record of all his trips.
